Window Cleaning vs. Window Washing: Is There a Difference?

You'll see both terms used interchangeably: "window cleaning" and "window washing." For most homeowners hiring a residential service, they mean the same thing.

But if you're comparing quotes, there's a subtle industry distinction worth knowing.

Window washing (traditional)

Historically, "window washing" refers to the classic squeegee-and-solution method:

• Apply a soap-and-water solution with a strip washer
• Pull it off with a squeegee in a single smooth motion
• Detail edges with a microfiber cloth

This is what most residential window cleaners still do for accessible glass. It's fast, it's proven, and when done right it leaves zero streaks.

Window cleaning (broader)

"Window cleaning" is a broader term that covers everything a modern crew does:

• Traditional squeegee work
• Pure-water pole systems for high glass (deionized water + a soft-bristled brush on a telescoping pole — no ladders on siding)
• Screen removal and brushing
• Frame and sill wiping
• Hard-water stain removal
• Track vacuuming

Most companies who call themselves "window cleaners" today do all of the above. Companies who advertise "window washing" tend to mean the traditional squeegee method only.

What matters when hiring

Don't get hung up on the term. Ask these instead:

1. Do you clean interior + exterior, or exterior only?
2. Are screens included? Brushed off? Rinsed?
3. What about frames and sills?
4. Do you use pure-water poles for high glass, or ladders on siding? Poles are gentler on your house.
5. Are you insured? The right answer is yes, and they should be able to prove it.

The name on the website matters less than the checklist. A good service does all of the above regardless of what they call it.
