The Best Way to Clean Windows Yourself

You do not need a cabinet full of specialty sprays to clean an accessible window well. The biggest differences come from using clean tools, enough wash solution, and a squeegee correctly.

This method is intended for windows you can safely reach from the ground or from inside your home. Do not lean out of an opening or improvise with an unstable ladder.

What you need

  • A bucket
  • Cool or lukewarm water
  • A small amount of mild dish soap
  • A window scrubber or clean microfiber cloth
  • A good rubber squeegee
  • Two dry microfiber towels
  • A soft brush or vacuum for loose dirt around tracks and frames

Avoid abrasive pads, razor blades, and harsh chemicals unless the window manufacturer specifically allows them. Some glass has coatings or films that can be scratched or damaged.

Step 1: Pick the right conditions

Work in shade or on a mild, cloudy day when possible. Hot glass makes water evaporate quickly, which gives soap and minerals more time to leave streaks.

Step 2: Remove loose debris

Brush or vacuum dust, cobwebs, and grit from the frame, sill, and track before wetting the glass. Otherwise, the dirt turns into muddy water that runs back across your clean window.

If the screen is removable, take it out and clean it separately with gentle soap and water. Let it dry before reinstalling it.

Step 3: Wash the entire pane

Mix a small amount of dish soap into your bucket of water. You want enough slip for the squeegee, not a bucket of foam. Wet the pane fully and scrub the edges and corners where buildup tends to collect.

For stuck-on material such as paint, construction debris, or heavy mineral deposits, stop before scraping. Using the wrong blade or chemical can permanently scratch glass or damage a coating.

Step 4: Squeegee from top to bottom

Wet the squeegee rubber, place it at the top corner, and pull it smoothly across or down the pane. Overlap each pass slightly. Wipe the rubber with a clean towel after every pass so dirt and water do not return to the glass.

A basic vertical pull is easiest for beginners. Professionals often use a continuous “S” motion because it is faster, but clean overlapping pulls can produce the same clear result.

Step 5: Detail the edges

Use a dry microfiber towel to wipe the narrow strip of water left around the frame. Keep this towel for edges only; rubbing the middle of the glass often creates fresh lint and smears.

Why windows still look streaky

The usual causes are:

  • Too much soap
  • Dirty squeegee rubber
  • A chipped or hardened rubber edge
  • Cleaning hot glass in direct sun
  • Reusing a wet detailing towel
  • Hard-water deposits that ordinary washing cannot remove

If a cloudy mark remains in the same place after the inside and outside are clean, the issue may be mineral etching or moisture between the panes rather than dirt.

Know when DIY is not worth the risk

Ground-level and safely accessible interior windows are reasonable DIY projects. Multi-story glass, steep ground, awkward rooflines, storm windows, and large panes are different. If the job requires overreaching or placing a ladder on an unstable surface, leave it to an insured professional.
