Do You Clean Window Screens, and How?

Yes. We clean screens. In fact, cleaning windows without touching the screens is like vacuuming a room and leaving the doormat filthy. The screens are what catch the pollen, dust, and road grime first, so when they're dirty, even freshly cleaned glass can look dull.

Why screens matter more than you think

Window screens are pollen traps. Every spring and summer, they collect a layer of fine dust that blocks airflow, reduces natural light, and eventually blows back onto the glass every time the wind kicks up. If you've ever wiped your windowsill and found a thick yellow line, most of that started on the screen.

Clean screens also make a bigger difference than people expect. The window itself can be spotless, but a dirty screen makes the whole opening look foggy from the inside.

How we clean screens

Our process depends on the condition of the screen, but here's the standard approach:

  • Remove the screen carefully from the window frame, noting any tears or bent frames
  • Brush off loose debris with a soft brush to remove dust, cobwebs, and pollen
  • Wash the mesh with a gentle solution that breaks down grime without damaging the screen material
  • Rinse and dry before reinstalling so no water drips onto your floors or sills

For light cleaning, we can often brush and wipe the screens in place. For heavier buildup, we remove them and give them a deeper wash.

What we check while we're at it

While the screens are out, we also look for torn mesh, loose frames, and broken clips. These small issues are much easier to fix when the screen is already in our hands, and they make a big difference in how well your windows function.

If your screens are in rough shape, we'll let you know before doing anything beyond cleaning. No surprises.
